INTRODUCTION

Vertebral disc prolapse is a disease of the spine vertebrae, involved in around 30% of the back pain, which causes chronic inability in a percentage of 1% to 3% of the world’s population. 

The displacement of part of the invertebral disc (nucleus pulposus) makes pression on the nerve root, causing neurological injury, inflammation and pain. Conventional treatment for vertebral disc prolapse goes through different techniques such as mechanical traction – slow and limited effectiveness – surgery or laser discectomy, a revolutionary treatment developed by INTERmedic to solve vertebral disc prolapse without surgery in a fast effective way. 

Discectomy treatment with PL3D™

Disc decompression or discectomy with PL3D™ laser is an innovative technique that reduces intradiscal pressure within the vertebra through laser vaporization of the part of the displaced nucleus pulposus.

The procedure consists in the introduction of a very thin needle to the invertebral disc through the back of the patient, helped of radiological monitoring. When the needle is placed, a laser fiber is introduced through it which will vaporize a small amount of nucleus pulposus, causing immediate intradiscal pressure reduction and removal of hernia of the nerve root.

Minimal risk of side effects

Gas formed during vaporization laser is removed with a handpiece specially designed for that purpose, containing a smoke evacuation system. This reduces to the minimum the risk of muscle cramps during the postoperative. The percutaneous use of PL3D™ method in microsurgery does neither damage the vertebral body by removing the intervertebral lamina, nor the vertebral facet joints or the ligament flavum.

PL3D™ technique is applied under local anesthesia, allowing to treat safely even patients with high surgical risk factors, such as cardiopulmonary decompensation, hepatic organ failure an other.

Its 980nm diode laser has the optimal wavelength for disc decompression due to his great ability to be absorbed by water (five times more than 810nm laser and double that 1064nm).
