What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are formed as a result of vein dilation due to blood accumulation. This means that poor circulation prevents blood from moving up towards the heart, and instead it remains stagnant inside the vein.
Why do varicose veins form?
There are various causes, as poor circulation of the blood and the resulting vein dilation may depend on various factors and even a genetic predisposition. The main causes include:
- Constipation
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Sedentary lifestyle or, on the other hand, being on your feet the whole day. These habits are usually related to different occupational activities.
- Wearing heels
- Hormone changes
What are the consequences of the onset of varicose veins?
The main symptoms of varicose veins are:
- Cramps
- Tingling
- Pain
- Heaviness
- Oedema
- Aesthetic problems
Aesthetic problems are generally exacerbated depending on the type of varicose vein. As a reminder, there are three main types:
- Truncal varicose veins: These are located above the muscle. They are bulging, pigmented and often have visible ulcers.
- Reticular varicose veins: These are located between the fascia and the surface of the skin. They are pigmented and prominent.
- Spider veins: As their name suggests, these varicose veins appear as thin red or purple lines in the form of a spider’s web. These veins are superficial and flat.
Treatment and prevention of varicose veins:
