Frequently asked questions about varicose veins and their laser treatment with Multidiode Endo™ laser

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are formed as a result of vein dilation due to blood accumulation. This means that poor circulation prevents blood from moving up towards the heart, and instead it remains stagnant inside the vein.

Why do varicose veins form?

There are various causes, as poor circulation of the blood and the resulting vein dilation may depend on various factors and even a genetic predisposition. The main causes include:

  • Constipation
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Sedentary lifestyle or, on the other hand, being on your feet the whole day. These habits are usually related to different occupational activities.
  • Wearing heels
  • Hormone changes

What are the consequences of the onset of varicose veins?

The main symptoms of varicose veins are:

  • Cramps
  • Tingling
  • Pain
  • Heaviness
  • Oedema
  • Aesthetic problems

Aesthetic problems are generally exacerbated depending on the type of varicose vein. As a reminder, there are three main types:

  • Truncal varicose veins: These are located above the muscle. They are bulging, pigmented and often have visible ulcers.
  • Reticular varicose veins: These are located between the fascia and the surface of the skin. They are pigmented and prominent.
  • Spider veins: As their name suggests, these varicose veins appear as thin red or purple lines in the form of a spider’s web. These veins are superficial and flat.

Treatment and prevention of varicose veins:

It is important to be aware that there is NO measure that guarantees 100% prevention of the onset of varicose veins, and if the varicose veins are not treated, they will not disappear.

There are various types of treatment depending on the type of varicose vein. In the past, these treatments had been surgical, were highly painful and required a long recovery period.

Now, INTERmedic offers the Multidiode Endo™ laser for the treatment of varicose veins, whether thick or spider-form. The laser is an effective treatment which allows the vein to be treated in a way that:

  • is minimally invasive;
  • does not require hospitalisation or a conventional surgical procedure;
  • is performed with local anaesthesia;
  • does not require a long or extended recovery period.

How does Multidiode Endo™ laser work?

The procedure involves introducing a laser fibre into the varicose vein. The light delivered allows the stagnated blood to coagulate, thereby allowing the vein to contract and return to its natural form.
