INTERmedic’s outstanding PL3D treatment technique for disc decompression

The PL3D Discectomy treatment
The PL3D procedure reduces intra-discal pressure with laser energy in cases of herniated intervertebral discs. A laser fiber, introduced through a 22 gauge needle, is inserted into the nucleus polposus under local anesthesia and fluoroscopic monitoring. The vaporization of only a small part of the nucleus results in an immediate decrease of the intra-discal pressure. As a consequence the herniation moves apart from the root of the nerve.

Minimized risks or side effects
The gas formed, during laser vaporization, is removed with the help of a specially developed handpiece incorporating a smoke evacuation system. Thus, any post-operative muscle spasms are reduced to a minimum.

The percutaneous PL3D method in microsurgery does neither damage the vertebral body by removing the intervertebral lamina, nor the vertebral facet joints or the ligament flavum.
As the PL3D technique is applied under local anesthesia, even patients with high surgical risks - e.g. cardiopulmonary decompensation, renal, hepatic, or major organ failure - can be safely treated.

The great advantages of the PL3D method:
  • Minimally invasive
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • No periradicular scarring or spinal instability
  • Reduced rehabilitation time
  • Does not preclude open surgery if needed
  • Cost-effective
