Fractional laser resurfacing: what it is and how does it work?

Thanks to the revolutionary fractional technology the fractional CO2 laser is undoubtedly the most complete tool for facial rejuvenation treatments with varying degrees of intensity and depth. What is a fractional laser and how does it work to achiev the best results to combat the passing of time?

Fractional technology is a benchmark for efficiency and comfort in laser resurfacing procedures. Fractional resurfacing consists in the emission of tiny laser energy beams which penetrate into the skin in the form of thermal columns all the way to the dermis while leaving untreated tissue in-between them. Laser energy is deposited into the tissue with a pattern of random shots which alternate areas treated by laser with those of intact skin. This provides for a faster recovery and tissue regeneration and is a virtually painless treatment.

These thermal microcolumns treat the dermis superficially and also in depth, reaching the underlying layers of the dermis and stimulating collagen formation. In addition, this mechanism allows for individualized treatments, adapting them to the needs of each patient.

        Fractional ablative and non-ablative

Fractional lasers are divided into two groups: ablatives and non-ablatives, depending on their effect on the skin and the depth at which they operate.

  • Ablative fractional lasers reach different penetration depths, depending on the type of laser. Their effect penetrates from the surface into the dermis, while exfoliating the skin layer by layer.
  • Fractional non-ablative lasers act directly in the deep dermis, facilitating the renewal of collagen, without affecting the superficial layers of the skin.

The results for fractional CO2 laser resurfacing are much better than those of erbium and recovery for the patients is faster and more comfortable than for procedures with non-fractional lasers.

Ultrafine™: versatility and efficiency in fractional resurfacing

Ultrafine™ is a CO2 laser emitting at a wavelength of 10,600 Nm. It works by thermal effect, allowing for in-depth vaporizing and coagulating, thus inducing an effective collagen remodeling. This laser from INTERmedic is a tool for daily use in dermo-aesthetic surgeries thanks to its versatility and effectiveness in multiple applications.

Ultrafine™ lets users perform three types of work:

  • Traditional resurfacing (medium depth and profound wrinkles, expression lines, acne scars, discoloring and loss of tone and texture).
  • Fractional rejuvenation (fine wrinkles, flaccidity and pigmented lesions).
  • Ablation, cutting and coagulation (surgery of dermatological lesions, general surgery, etc.).

Precise vaporization and profound dermal heating

Ultrafine™ is capable of behaving like a mild Erbium, like a real ablative CO2 laser with the capacity to vaporize quickly and safely, without charring the tissue and heating the deep papillary and superior reticular dermis, thus stimulating collagen synthesis.

The basic principle of the C02 laser, which permits its administration in medical cosmetic procedures, is the high water absorption of its wavelength, one of the main components of the dermis and epidermis. This feature of the skin allows for fast and efficient tissue vaporization with the C02 laser and to cut and coagulate as well.

Furthermore, the properties of this laser also make Ultrafine an excellent tool for cosmetic surgery procedures like rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty or traditional facelift.
